Why is this Pest such a nuisance?

The spotted Lanternfly is a relatively new pest that has infested many states in the U.S.. Its origin is from Asia, and is now in our country. The big problem with this insect is its appetite to eat our crops, trees, and excrete a mold that is not good for plants. If you see one of these, kill it, and report it at the Virginia Cooperative Extension. If you see its larvae or eggs, you should also dispose of that. Tree professionals are supposed to keep an eye out for it on our equipment, like chainsaws, pole saws, etc.

There is a lot of information about the Spotted Lanternfly.

The Spotted Lanternfly, also known as Lycorma delicatula, is an invasive insect species native to China, India, and Vietnam. It was first discovered in the United States in Pennsylvania in 2014 and has since spread to other states. This pest poses a significant threat to various crops, including grapes, apples, and hardwood trees. Efforts to control its spread include the use of insecticides, tree banding, and the removal of its preferred host, the Tree of Heaven. Public education and awareness campaigns are also crucial in managing the impact of the Spotted Lanternfly.

I spotted this one in Prince William County and we reported it right away. I also saw a swarm of them while walking on a trail in the same location. Try stepping on one, they are tough to squish but eventually you will get it or them if you keep trying!
