This is a great question. Some home owners try to tackle the complicated task of performing tree work themselves. This can often lead to non-desirable outcomes. As professionals, we have received calls before to help customers get out of a tree emergency jam! Whether in the industry or not, professional or not, people all over get injured every month unfortunately due to tree related accidents. This is why we here at JL Tree Service Inc focus on a safety first perspective. We have worked hard on promoting safety in our organization. This includes becoming TCIA Accredited through our industry organization. This has been a huge step as the accreditation requires weekly safety meetings, and having Certified Safety Tree Care Professionals on staff. Below are good ways to identify how to hire a good company
This is probably the most important thing to look for in a tree company since tree work is so dangerous. You don’t want someone getting hurt on the job or injuring your property without insurance. That is why to look for a fully insured with workman’s compensation and liability insurance. Tree companies have some of the highest insurance rates in the service industry due to the danger and complexity of our job. You want ask for the following COI and make sure companies have the appropriate coverage amounts – Certificate of Insurance.
Be careful of companies that sub-contract employees because they might not be insured. It is Ok to use a company that subs work, as long as the sub also carries the necessary insurance – ask for their COI also if they do sub out the work. Of course its usually best if the employees are actually employees of the tree company that you hire.
Companies that have to rent equipment (such as cranes) to get their work done are usually higher in their pricing because they have to cover the cost of the equipment. It is much more preferred if a company owns all of their own equipment, because they can pass those savings onto you. Plus its safer since the employees and equipment operators work daily with each other as a team.
The Tree Care industry has 2 associations; the Tree Care Industry Association and the International Society of Arboriculture. It is good to hire companies that are at least members of the TCIA and have at least 1 ISA Certified Arborist on staff. It is also important to make sure that they follow the ANSI A300 tree pruning methods & Z133 safety methods.
